This set of handmade Suribachi (grinding bowl) and Surikogi (grind powder wood) is a Japanese mortar and pestle. They are used for crushing different ingredients, such as sesame seeds, in Japanese cooking.

The Suribachi is a pottery mortar with a single mouth. It is also recommended for making your favourite sauce and dressing. Both the glaze on the outside and the shaving inside the bowl are manually crafted by artisans.

The Surikogi is a pestle made from natural wood. There is a string hook on top of the pestle, which makes hanging and drying easier.

As the whole piece is handmade, slight irregularities in size, glaze, colour and texture might occur and reflect the nature of the artisan product.
